Some of the best statistics for this team from 2007 were on the ground. We can’t decide if the offensive line was better than the defensive, but they were both amazing in 2007. The Vikings were the No. 1 team in the NFL in terms of total rushing yardage gained (2,634), and similarly they were the No. 1 NFL defense in terms of yardage allowed on the ground (1,185). The Vikings allowed the second fewest yards per carry on average of any defense (3.1), but gained the most yardage per rush attempt of any NFL team on offense (5.3). The Vikings had the most rushing touchdowns in the league (22). Because it looks like they have the rushing side of things down solid, the Vikings decided to use the draft to get better in the air- both on offense and defense. While the Vikings did not have a first-round pick, they did have a shot at getting a player in the secondary in the second round. They picked Arkansas St.’s Tyrell Johnson, a safety. Johnson was the 43rd pick overall. While some people question his size, it’s been noted that he’s a sound tackler in the secondary. The Vikings will probably have a good position battle at the S position, because they need to improve their pass defense- and they need to do so quickly.
The Vikings’ passing stats were average to poor last year. Although multiple quarterbacks that lined up in the back field last season threw 14 interceptions (middle of the pack), they only managed to gain 2,746 total passing yards (ranked 28th in the league). Of course, that might have simply been a result of the fact that Minnesota attempted the fewest passing plays in the league (432). Will that change with the addition of USC quarterback John David Booty? The Vikings might be in the mood to get this rookie behind the center if he can be impressive at training camp, although the safe money would bet that he doesn’t start on opening day. Booty is accurate, even while moving, and that’s exactly what the Vikings need. If Booty gets the starting job, Minnesota Viking tickets might just allow you to see a team that utilizes the air from time to time.
