I am moving to DC at the end of the month. Is there a temporary parking pass I can get to avoid tickets?
I moving to an area that is zoned for residential parking. I know I will need to apply for a parking permit very soon upon my arrival. However, I do not want tickets for the week or so I will be in the moving process and cannot get to the DMV.
You can get a temporary parking pass from the police substation that serves your house. You do however have to apply in person, and cannot do it over the phone. However, it should be a much faster process than the DMV. It is also intended for visitors, but I’d imagine if you explain your reason they’ll give you one. Be sure to take proof of your address.
One thing to be aware of- Residential Parking Permit (RPP) in DC is done block by block. Not every block is zoned, even in areas where some blocks are zoned. The residents of each block must petition to get an RPP designation. In my neighborhood there were two blocks that did not have houses on them (a quirk of geography and a school building) and were consequently unzoned. I was able to park there without problem for several weeks until I was able to get all my registration taken care of. You might take a walk around your new neighborhood and see if the same might apply for you.
