Owner Of The Oldest Bennington Driving School Writes On Parallel Parking
As the owner of the oldest Bennington Driving School I get allot of similar questions from parents and students.
I decided to write a few articles or so about some of the most common mistakes that students make while taking their road test.
For many parents, parallel parking was their roadblock to passing the behind-the-wheel test. And yes, parallel parking is important. Keeping that in mind, we don’t want to lose focus and forget to teach many of the real world aspects of driving that as parents, we have experienced and can teach our children. Things like the proper way to merge on to a highway, what to do in a road rage incident, etc.
When it comes to teaching parallel parking, see if you can get your hands of a couple of cones or some way to anchor two poles with bright colored flags or hankies on the tops. Find an appropriate place to set up a parking spot using your cones or poles.
Much of the added fear and frustration of parallel parking is due to the crowded street on which you’re attempting the maneuver. Not only do you have to worry about the cars behind you,
you may also have to worry about oncoming traffic. When your front end swings out to the left, it may cross into the lane of oncoming traffic. You also have to take care when pulling into your space without hitting the curb or the cars to your front and rear.
It’s best to take your teenager to a quiet area with little or not traffic to get practice when first starting to learn how to parallel park. Even better if you can get permission to use a vacant parking lot. During the first few attempts at parking, you should be standing outside the car and guiding your child so they get the hang of it.
While practicing parallel parking, keep in mind some of the things that the instructor on the road test will be looking for. After pulling up and aligning the vehicle, check mirrors to make sure no vehicles are behind you. Another is to be no more than a few inches away from the curb. Also, make sure to use the turn signal while driving up to the parking spot in order to let the traffic behind you know your intent to take that parking spot.
Once you have it down in a safe, quiet street or vacant lot, now its time to move on to a residential neighborhood. Find a spot where there are parked cars with a parking spot open between them. If you’re worried, find a couple of older cars to park in between rather than a Mercedes or BMW.
Finally, always be aware of the front end of the car swinging out into the street as you’re backing into the parking spot. As we all know, in the real world some drivers are impatient and will not wait until you’re backed into your parking spot. They may try to go around you in a hurry and cause a so-called “fender bender”.
