Is Steve Blake the missing link for the Nuggets?
Steve Blake, point guard of the 2002 National Champion Maryland Terrapins, looks to be what the Nuggets needed.
He is currently averaging about 6 assists a game as a back up PG.
He doesn’t have the glamour that former backup PG Earl Boykins had, but is helping the team more.
I have them as a strong favorite to win the Championship.
Blake was an important pick-up for the Nuggets. He’s a smart, pass-first point guard who doesn’t turn the ball over, and can get the ball to Denver’s scorers. If you notice, Iverson’s shooting percentage is higher than his career average this year, and the reason is his reduced ball-handling responsibilities due to Blake’s presence.
To say that he’s the missing link though is a stretch. He adds an element to their offense because he’s the type of point guard that can direct an efficient offense, and he’s a decent 3-point shooter. But, the Nuggets’ problem doesn’t have anything to do with offense. They’re possibly the worst defensive team in the league; certainly the worst among playoff contenders. Blake doesn’t help this problem, because he’s not a good defender. The missing link on this team is Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson leading by example, on the defensive end as well as on offense.
