Qustion for Jane B about the Oval for sick bunny?
Hello. My mini lop Hare Jordan is not feeling well this morning. I let him out and he was not running around and playing and bugging the heck out of me like always. He is just laying by the wall for like the past 3 hours! And when he does get up it looks like he is trying to pee or go to the bathroom by the wall and nothing is really coming out though. This is wierd because he is potty trained and has NEVER gone to the bathroom outside of his cage! He always jumps back in to go and then jumps back out! I keep laying down next to him and massaging his belly like I read on a website and I heard some noises. I also read that 100% pineapple juice will help clear any blockage in their tummies? Have u tried this? Does the Oval you are talking about really work? I will try in a few hours when I can get to the store if it does!
Because your rabbit is lethargic and isn’t peeing/pooping normally, it sounds like he has ileus, or intestinal stasis. It’s fairly serious since ileus can cause an intestinal blockage leading to harmful bacteria overwhelming the normal bacterial biology of the delicate cecum. This causes painful gas, and the toxins produced by the bacteria can cause liver damage as a side effect if left untreated.
Is your rabbit passing anything? Even small fecal pellets? Is he eating anything? Does his belly feel soft when you palpate it or is it hard and/or bloated? Does he have or has he had any other problems?
Do not give pineapple juice!!! If this is intestinal stasis, the high sugar content will only exacerbate the overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the intestines. There are better and much more effective, veterinarian approved ways to either mechanically stimulate intestinal movement, or giving Simethicone as gas relief. Before you do any of this, you must consult a rabbit-savvy veterinarian and have him/her do an examination of your rabbit to see exactly what the issue is.
Because no one on this forum can physically examine your rabbit to see what the problem is, and because there are a lot of quacks parading as “experts” touting pineapple juice and ovals, you really should only trust the advice of your vet. While it sounds like ileus, it could be something completely different caused by an undiagnosed problem, so your best bet is to be cautious and take your rabbit to the vet.
