What does it mean when a show on Broadway gives preview performances?
So I am going to New York next week, and I really want to see Hair. It will only be showing preview performances while I am there and I will buy the tickets, but I really don’t know what I would be in for… Can anyone tell me if purchasing tickets for a preview performance is worth the money?
A preview is the entire show. There is the possibility that they will stop the show if something goes horribly wrong and fix it and start again. Previews are meant to allow the actors to become accustomed to the audience before opening night and all the critics come. Plus, in comedies, it is necessary for the actors to develop their timing… ie. pausing for laughs, working on areas that should be funny but aren’t working for whatever reason. Also, this allows the stage manager to get a better idea of the running time of the show.
I would go if it is all you can see. It will be fine.
