Miami Dolphins Tickets – Dolphins Land Big Target in Brandon Marshall
After the Denver Broncos grew tired of star wide receiver Brandon Marshall’s off-field antics, the Miami Dolphins stepped in to capitalize. As the other teams in the AFC East have improved this offseason, the Dolphins traded two second-round picks to the Broncos in exchange for Marshall’s services, which should instantly upgrade the Dolphins’ passing attack. Marshall has become just the most recent high-maintenance wide receiver to be moved to another team and it seems that the Dolphins are set to be the biggest benefactor by far.
Though there is some risk in terms of Marshall’s diva personality, there is no question about his ability to produce on the field. With a limited quarterback in Kyle Orton and playing only 15 games in 2009, Marshall still accumulated 101 catches, 1,120 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. In one game alone, Marshall snagged 21 catches against the Colts, giving him the record for most catches in a single game. With his rare combination of size, speed, agility and exceptional hands, Marshall remains one of the most difficult receivers in the entire league to cover.
Still, with such a tumultuous history and a temperament prone to childish antics, not every team was willing to take a gamble on Marshall. In the improving AFC East, however, Dolphins President Bill Parcells certainly seems to think that the risk is worth the reward. The Dolphins do have a strong-armed quarterback in Chad Henne, who can likely get the ball downfield to Marshall if he gets protection. There is also the added incentive that Marshall will help sell <a href=”http://www.stubhub.com/miami-dolphins-tickets/”>Miami Dolphins tickets</a> and instantly improve the offensive outlook of a team that struggled to create offense in 2009.
The move also will help Parcells in terms of his outlook for the upcoming draft. Parcells likes to avoid big risks, particularly in the first round, and will likely look to continue to build along the offensive and defensive lines now that they have a legitimate playmaker in Marshall. While receivers are very hit or miss in making the transition to the NFL, offensive and defensive linemen bring a much lower overall risk for a team that will have to pay handsomely for a high draft pick’s services. In Parcells’ first year as the Dolphins’ president, he used the first overall pick in the draft to select offensive lineman Jake Long to minimize the risk instead of taking highly touted players like Darren McFadden or Glen Dorsey. In addressing the Dolphins’ concerns in skill positions this offseason, Parcells will likely do something similar in the draft this year.
For the Broncos, though, the move is a bit puzzling. In the past two seasons, the Broncos have shipped out their top two offensive players in Jay Cutler and now Brandon Marshall. Kyle Orton is a decent quarterback for the most part, but he certainly doesn’t seem like the long-term answer. After taking the league by storm to start the season in 2009, the Broncos faltered down the stretch and missed the playoffs. Now, without a big target for Orton to throw to, the Broncos could be in for a long season in 2010.
On the positive side, getting two second-round picks is actually considerably better than one first-round pick for a team that is a few pieces away from contention. Second-round picks are quite a bit cheaper than first-rounders and the Broncos should be able to turn the Marshall trade into two starters if they draft well. But whenever you trade away a player of the talent of Marshall, you’re opening the door for criticism and potential failure. Even if the Broncos get two legitimate starters out of the trade, it’s highly unlikely they will get a player near the caliber of Marshall, who, despite his problems, seems destined to be a superstar wide receiver in this league for a long time.
